Mental Health interpreting requires much more than facilitating communication. The interpreter must become part of the treatment team as the linguistic expert. This workshop focuses on the role of the mental health interpreter, common language dysfluencies, and etiologies of Deafness that impact language and mental health. In order for a team to function effectively both interpreters must have a firm understanding of their roles while interpreting and while in the supporting role. Amy Lankheit and Heidi Cook explore the process of establishing an effective team. Points of interest include efficacious pre-session meetings, supporting techniques, and post-session meetings. Medical is a setting where interpreters are most frequently requested to provide services. This often leads to interpreters not preparing adequately due to their presumptive familiarity. Amy Lankheit will focus on common procedures, vocabulary, and best practices while interpreting for patients and providers. Amy will discuss the im-portance of interpreters owning a large arsenal of classifiers and their application to medical interpreting.
